Having good mentors is instrumental in developing important skills like delivering bad news in a compassionate yet effective manner. Delivering bad news can be a daunting task for physicians, particularly young physicians who have not yet had much experience. Several organizations have recommended the use of various mnemonics. In this course, we discuss an approach to delivering bad news and provide Board Members and Executives with insights into this important and difficult task. This course will be useful for Physicians and those tasked with creating an optimal environment.

DAVID LEVIEN, MD, MBA, FACS

Dave received his BA from The Johns Hopkins University and his MD, Cum Laude, from The Georgetown University School of Medicine. He was Chief Resident at The University of Massachusetts Hospital and served his Colorectal Surgery Fellowship at The Ferguson Clinic. He is Boarded in General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Surgical Critical Care. He received his MBA from The University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management.

Dr. Levien practiced clinical surgery for 33 years, 20 of which were as Chairman of Surgery and 12 as Program Director of a Surgical Residency. He has served as a Member of The Board of Directors of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, The Philadelphia County Medical Society, and The Shore Acres Point Corporation. Dave is presently on The Board of Directors of Meals on Wheel and Senior Outreach Services of Walnut Creek and Chairman of their audit committee. He presently also serves on The Board of Directors of The Chamber of Commerce of Pleasant Hill. He has been President of The Baltimore Academy of Surgery and The Pennslyvania Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He has been Vice President of The Academy of Surgery of Philadelphia and Vice President of the national society, The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

Dave has published three textbooks of surgery and multiple papers in the peer reviewed journals. He is a Fellow of The American College of Physician Executives and is a Certified Physician Executive.
